Here’s an in-depth look at the graduation options at UNISUS.

Graduation Pathways at UNISUS

At UNISUS, students may graduate under one of several diploma pathways:

  1. Dogwood Diploma (British Columbia’s standard high school diploma)
  2. Enriched Dogwood Diploma (Dogwood with IB-enriched components)
  3. Dual IB–Dogwood Diploma (full IB Diploma plus Dogwood)

Regardless of pathway, all students meet the BC Ministry of Education’s core requirements and are encouraged to participate in community service, leadership, and enrichment activities to support their post-secondary goals.

Dogwood Diploma (BC High School Diploma)

  • This is the foundational diploma under the British Columbia education system. Students must accumulate a minimum number of credits in required subject areas, including language, mathematics, sciences, and social studies. All UNISUS students can graduate with the Dogwood Diploma, regardless of their chosen pathway.
  • This ensures that every graduate earns a recognized credential accepted across British Columbia, Canada, and internationally.

Enriched Dogwood Diploma

  • This pathway is for students who want a more challenging academic experience without fully committing to the full IB Diploma.
  • Students meet all the BC Dogwood requirements but take one or more IB courses at the standard or higher level as part of their curriculum.
  • It combines the provincial curriculum with inquiry-based learning elements from the IB framework.
  • Students earn the Dogwood Diploma and may also receive IB course Certificates that can lead to advanced standing or credit transfers at universities.
  • The workload is more moderate than the full IB Diploma, and typical homework expectations are one to two hours per day.

Dual IB–Dogwood Diploma (Full IB Diploma Pathway)

  • This is the most intensive and globally recognized pathway at UNISUS. Students complete the full International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP) and meet all British Columbia Dogwood requirements, graduating with both diplomas.
  • The IB Diploma Programme requires students to take six subjects (three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level) and complete the IB core components: Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Extended Essay (EE), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS).
  • Students are also expected to complete an Indigenous-focus course and a Capstone Project as part of the UNISUS curriculum.
  • The average daily workload is higher, typically two to three hours of study time outside of class.
  • This pathway is ideal for students with strong university ambitions in Canada and internationally. Many IB graduates enjoy advanced standing, credit transfers, or exemptions at top universities.

Choosing the right pathway depends on a student’s interests, capacity, and goals. Here are a few considerations:

  • Academic ambition: If your goal is to gain competitive entry to a university, especially abroad, the full IB path offers strong preparation and global recognition.
  • Workload tolerance: The full IB path demands more study hours and rigour; the Enriched Dogwood offers a balanced middle ground.
  • Flexibility: Enriched Dogwood allows more elective freedom while integrating select IB elements.
  • University recognition: All pathways result in the Dogwood Diploma, but IB credentials provide additional advantages for credit or placement.
  • Support & readiness: Students should consult UNISUS’s academic advisors and the Student Success Center team to choose the most suitable option.

Often, students choose between:

  • A Humanities-focused IB configuration
  • A Science or Mathematics-focused IB configuration
  • A Scholar-Athlete or Enrichment blend that pairs academics with advanced sports training or other specialized pursuits
